Amelia's Story
Amelia Monroe is a third-year economics and journalism student at Arizona State University's Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. She intends to graduate with honors in spring 2026.
Monroe has spent the majority of her life moving around the country and was fortunate to be immersed in a variety of different cultures. She was raised in Dearborn, Michigan and moved to Silicon Valley, California in middle school, where she was first introduced to journalism. In high school, Monroe was accepted into New York University's journalism summer program and was awarded the universities Darlene Forest Award, which recognizes students for their dedication, passion and writing. She eventually made her way to Phoenix, Arizona to attend ASU.
Since arriving in Arizona, she has written freelance articles for the Glendale Star, Palo Alto Weekly and AZ Big Media. Monroe spent her fall 2024 semester in Washington, D.C. working as a congressional correspondent and environmental beat reporter for Cronkite News, an affiliate outlet of Arizona PBS. While covering Congress and the 2024 U.S. elections, she wrote an investigation into chemical contamination from a Tucson, Arizona military base that prompted a response from the U.S. Air Force. She also wrote a series of stories on the impacts of the Inflation Reduction Act on renewable energy.
In spring 2025, Monroe worked as a social media specialist for MadridMedia. She has written, edited, copyedited and created multimedia marketing materials, including videos and press releases, for a variety of businesses across the Arizona valley. She was recently named a Society of Environmental Journalists Fellow and will report on their annual conference in April 2025.
Monroe is on the hunt for an internship in economic, environmental or political reporting, news gathering, research or analysis.
